Damn Girl, Where You Been?

Hey guys! I know I've been missing-in-action but a lot has been happening around my way. The biggest thing is I will be going back to school to pursue a masters degree. Classes begin next week and I will be going full-time while continuing to work full-time. I know that sounds absolutely nuts but why not? I have no children and I'm still young. Go hard or go home, right?

So what does that mean for the blog? I honestly don't know but I'm optimistic. The cool thing about my program is that it is tailored for working adults so classes are in the evenings. I will be in class three nights a week + studying will leave little time for anything else. BUT I have a plan, a very strict plan, which includes blogging. I love Faces by Tamara and all of you readers so a small part of me will die if the blog falls by the wayside. I'm a pretty disciplined person so I don't for see having any trouble keeping up with the plan, its all in my control. I will keep you all posted on this new journey and what comes of it.

I also have other updates like my hair (will it stay or will it go?), home organization chronicles, wardrobe building, makeup (of course), DIY's and my fitness journey. Remember I shared my little secret with you all? Well I put a stop to that!!

Thank you guys for all the support. I think about you everyday, I really do. I should be back with regular postings and video tutorials within the coming weeks. In the meantime, follow me on Twitter!

1. As always, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin according to your skin type.

2. Even your skin tone with tinted moisturizer like Laura Mercier's SPF 20 tinted moisturizer. If you want more coverage, try Make Up For Ever's HD Foundation. Set with a loose powder.

3. Next fill in your brows with a brow pencil. MAC has a great brown pencil that comes in a variety of colors.

4. Prime your eyes with a primer of your choice, NYX Eyeshadow Base Primer works well. With a blending brush, lightly apply Inglot's 479 Double Sparkle Eyeshadow or any other grey shadow with a light sparkle to your eyes. Extend the shadow to underneath your eyes as well. Next you want to line your top and bottom with a black liner. I suggest Stila Kajal Eyeliner in Onyx. Add mascara and lashes.

5. Smile and lightly apply an orange hued blush to your cheeks. NARS Taj Mahal is FAB!

6. Lastly apply a light nude lipgloss to your lips. Try Viva Glam V!!!

Beauty fades. Period. Growing old gracefully is always the plan but even the oh-so-gorgeous Diahann Carroll finally aged. Or you can have a terrible freak accident (God-forbid) and have your physical beauty taken away. So what else you got?

By and large, I believe we live in a pretty attractive world (as far as I can see, which may not be saying much but still). Whether its natural beauty or surgically manifested, there is a whole heaping set of pretty people in the world. In the next cube, around the corner, in the bathroom, on the train, at the gym doing squats in the mirror directly in front of your man. Definitely, pretty might get you a base but it won't get you a home run. There will always be a woman prettier, curvier with a smaller waist and bigger donk, bigger tits, longer hair or a man with bigger muscles, washboard abs, a more chiseled jawline and a darker caeser with 360 waves. In order to stand out or leave an impression, you have to be about more than your exterior. You need a personality, or at least a skill or hobby. We can spend an hour blending our makeup to perfection but will that make someone remember our names? Nope! Let's dig deeper.

Its been hot lately, like beyond hot. If your hair is anything like mine, it has been dry, frizzy and down right pissed at the humidity. Just like every summer, I have been tempted to shave my head Steve Harvey style but then I remember that this heat shall pass. Check out the tips below for learn how to survive the heat with hassle free hair!

For styles that are free-flowing such as braid outs or twist outs, use minimal amounts of products that are lightweight. This makes for fluffier, shiner, hair with lots of body. Now you can use a combination of products, however use them sparingly, and choose them wisely. Too much product can make the hair appear weighed down and lacks movement.

Get the hair clean before styling, whether you use bentonite clay, sulfate shampoo, herbs, or baking soda, make sure the hair is free from residue before styling. Your hair will be shinier, and have more body if you start with a clean palate.

Detangle hair only while loaded with conditioner. Condition for about 15 minutes to let the moisturizing properties penetrate my strands, then detangle, and finally sit back under my dryer for another 15 minutes.

If you have tangle-prone hair, try shampooing and conditioning while in four fat braids or twists. Less hair lost and split while detangling = more retention.

When you are shampooing your hair, use your fingertips not your nails to gently cleanse your scalp.

Landscape Dreaming

So the big project at Lola (what I affectionately call my home) right now is my backyard. Its pretty much a bare canvas for me to do whatever I want. This project will be DIY for the most part but so I can't see it being too elaborate. But with enough HGTV and wine, you never know.

So here's my yard. The grass needs work.

So one of the major things I want to do, that's going to have to be professionally done, is expand the patio. Right now the patio is really small and the table is pretty much taking up the whole space.

The right side of the yard is lined with trees so its hard for grass to grow underneath. So I'm going to section of that side with some type of brick border and plant greenery and flowers from front to back. I'm so excited!!

I also plan to get a shed to go against the back fence and I will plant some small tress on both sides. There will be a gazebo somewhere in the yard for extra seating and decor but I'm sure exactly where yet. Its important that my dog still has plenty of space to play so lots of grass is a must.

Here's my first mock up. I'm sure I'll be adding/changing stuff as I go along.

It has been nasty hot lately so I have been living in light weight maxi dresses. I have been opting for care-free hair as well. This is a six day old braid out that hadn't been re-braided for the past two nights so it turned into a fro. I bought a pack of synthetic braiding hair and braided two individual braids, pinned them around my head like a headband. This keeps my hair out of my face and it's chic. I've been wearing my hair in a fro a lot lately because my boyfriend thinks its super sexy. He almost had a heart attack when I pulled out the pack of braiding hair though. It's amazing me how men can love weaved out celebrities but act like they can't stand weaves on regular women. Humph.

My dress is from Forever 21. I have on flat jelly GUESS sandals and my all my jewelry came from street vendors.

I named this post Patience because for the past 17 months I have been tested in ways I've never been before. How so? I'm in a long distance relationship. Before February 2010 I would have never thought it a million years that I, Tamara, would be in a long distance relationship. Just wasn't my thing. I need my man near. I need to be able to see him when I want. Just wasn't in the plan. But clearly it was in His plan. So I have been spending the past 17 months traveling to Charleston to see my love. It started off with us alternating weekends. Then that became to much for me so being that my boyfriend hates to see me stressed he said he'll just come to Charlotte every weekend so I wouldn't have to travel. I felt that would have been selfish of me and would have gotten old to him quick so I said I'll come as often as I feel which turned into me going to Charleston about once a month, him coming to Charlotte about twice a month and us having a weekend a part. Its working, but I'm over it. I'm not over my relationship, just over the long distance part.

I know that these relationships can work. I know for a fact that they do work. I know that there may be people reading this post right now who may be in the same situation but live too far apart from their mate to see them every weekend. Or my three hour drive may seem like a breeze compared to their six hour car drive or five hour flight. I think about those couple too and I pray for their relationship along with mine.

My boyfriend and I do have a plan to be together. After much deliberation we have decided that Charlotte would be the best place for us (Thank God) but this distance thing is not getting easier, its getting harder. Its harder to say goodbye, its hard trying to shove all of our activities together in a weekend, its hard to have to settle for talking on the phone after a long day when I really need a hug.

I wanted to share this test with you all because I know that there is a testimony waiting. If we remain Patient there are blessings waiting that we can't even imagine. I often have to remind myself that this, my relationship is greater than me. Its about us, our future and our legacy. Its about God.

No matter what may be testing you. There is an end. It will get better. Just stay faithful and have Patience. God wants nothing more but to bless us with the desires of our heart but we have to earn them. And we all know that anything worth having is worth fighting for. Don't give up! We're not!

I Have a Little Secret...

I'm getting fat. Well... let me add a disclaimer: I'm not fat (yet) but I am beginning to pick up some weight and if I don't stop while I'm ahead, it will not end well. I noticed the extra poundage a while back but I just attributed it to being bloated because for some reason I always feel bloated but I didn't have my "aha moment" until this past weekend when I pulled out a loose fitting summer dress that I hadn't worn since last year and it was tight. Maybe I've been feeling bloated because I've been gaining weight? Duh! All the signs were there; I've been opting to take my dog to the dog park instead of walking or jogging with him, I haven't been to the gym in about a month and prior to that I could only make myself go once a week, and I've been eating all the sushi, Chinese and Caribbean food in sight. Just reckless!

I'm not a thin person by nature. I am curvy. I have a booty. I have thick thighs. Athletic build (I think). So sometimes its a little hard for me to tell when I'm gaining weight (which may be denial). I love my shape, its feminine and when toned can be referred to as "brick house" lol. But the problem is my waist is catching up to my hips, the cellulite is starting to show and my clothes are just tight. No bueno.

So I stated all of this to 1) hold myself accountable 2) inspire someone else who may be feeling the same way and 3) share some tips with you. Exercise is a key component and I plan to start walking my dog regularly again and hitting the gym three times a week but diet is everything. Eating "healthy" is not always the most convenient nor is it cheap but its necessary for our overall health. Below are some tips for adopting a healthier diet from www.blackgirlsrun.com/.

1.) If calories are king, then portions are queen: While most of us already know the importance of reading food labels and knowing how many calories we’re consuming, the area that I’m learning often gets overlooked is serving size. Even when I cook at home, I pay close attention to what’s considered a single serving and measure out my portions accordingly. You’d be amazed how something can seem low in calories until you take a look at the serving size, which is usually much smaller than what any average person would eat. A good example of this can be found at one of the gazillion frozen yogurt shops that have become popular over the last year (which I’m SO guilty of frequenting myself). The average shop lists their ‘original’ flavor as containing about 70 calories. I’ve often heard people praise how “guilt-free” and low in calories this is, however, being the calorie-conscious person that I am, I found it awfully strange that while calories are listed, serving size is nowhere to be found. After doing a little research, I learned that a serving at most fro-yo shops is about 3 oz.—sometimes even less. Given the ginormous cups offered at fro-yo shops these days, (I know you’ve seen them!) that’s not much! In fact, since most of these shops charge by the ounce, as a challenge, take a look at your receipt next time and do the math. I guarantee you’ll learn you’re consuming a heck of a lot more than 70 calories!

2.) Just because it sounds healthy, doesn’t mean it is: Much like the aforementioned frozen yogurt debacle, I’ve learned never to take anything at face value, because while it may sound healthy and “lite,” that doesn’t mean it is. Sure a whole wheat bagel with low-fat cream cheese sounds and is better than its regular counterpart, with an average of 450 calories (not to mention the high carbs) it’s still quite a significant addition to your daily intake; especially if you’re eating it as a snack. A better choice might be an Arnold sandwich thin or two slices of Ezekiel 4:9 bread, which you can top with a nut butter and honey or all-natural apple butter. Also, while salads are always a great choice, if your salad is topped with cheese, bacon bits, croutons and the whole nine, all while slathered in ranch or Thousand Island dressing, hate to break it to you, but you may as well have opted for the hamburger. Instead, try sticking with lean meats, fruits and veggies, and raw nuts and seeds as toppings. And when it comes to dressings, I’ve found that it’s often safest to stay away from the creamy varieties altogether (since they are typically the highest in calories and fat) and opt for choices in the Italian or vinaigrette family instead. A great trick I really love is using raw apple cider vinegar as a salad dressing. It tastes delicious and has zero calories and zero fat so you can drench your salad to your heart’s content! But, hey—if you know you love your ranch dressing and can’t live without it, simply remember tip #1 and just be mindful of your portions. To do this, consider measuring out a serving or two into a small dish and dipping your fork into the dressing rather than pouring it on top. This will not only help you use less, but it’ll also keep you aware of how much you’re consuming.

3.) There’s a substitute for everything: As with my apple cider vinegar trick, I’ve learned that for every unhealthy food you love, there’s a way to make it healthier or find a healthy alternative, and the small changes can make a huge difference. For instance, instead of bread, I often eat sandwiches on two wheat crackers (my fave is Wasa Crispbread), which not only taste great, but are only 30 calories a slice as opposed to the 70-110 a slice of regular bread. Also, did you know that unsweetened vanilla almond milk has almost half the calories of 2% dairy milk? I’ve switched to this and never looked back! I’m also a big fan of Smart Beat dairy-free cheese slices (25 calories a slice vs. the average 70 calories) and lastly, as a huge pasta lover, I’ve found that whole wheat pastas (again watching portions) and spaghetti squash are just as satisfying as the real thing, and I’ve never heard anyone who took my advice on this disagree!

4.) Prepare, prepare, prepare: One of my rules of thumb is “the best way to know what you’re eating is to prepare it yourself.” As a result, something I’ve found especially helpful to staying on track is packing my breakfast, lunch, and all snacks for work. This way I have wholesome meals and snacks in queue at all times, so I’m not tempted to fall into the office juice and bagel trap, eat fast food for lunch, or head to the vending machine for 3 p.m. munchies. Some of my common snacks include: carrots, cucumbers, and bells peppers with hummus; grapes with a Laughing Cow cheese wedge; a piece of fruit like an orange, apple, or nectarine; or a wheat cracker/rice cake topped with apples slices and drizzled with honey, and a little cinnamon. Now, of course I recognize we can’t always eat only our own food since we all love to eat out from time to time, but even in these cases it’s still possible to be proactive. Before I go to a restaurant, I almost always Google their menu to see if I can find the nutrition information, which often times is available on their website. This helps me review my options and make a healthy choice beforehand rather than getting to the restaurant and letting my eyes make the decision for me. Also, as a person who enjoys having a cocktail or two when I’m out, I’ve even recently began preparing on this front since many cocktails have just as many calories as a full meal. I like to keep a few Crystal Light packets in my purse and if the mood strikes for a drink and I know I want to keep it light, I opt for a vodka and tonic (or club soda) and mix in my packet for an instant low calorie cocktail! Works like a charm!

5.) Your freezer is your friend: If you’re looking to adopt healthier eating habits, some common concerns you may have are: How will I make time to eat healthy? Won’t it be expensive? If I buy a bunch of produce, won’t it spoil before I get a chance to use it all? My answer: Frozen is the way to go! Not only do I stock up on bags of frozen veggies (which are pretty inexpensive I might add), I also purchase frozen chicken breasts and shrimp for easy access when I need a lean protein, I freeze my loaves of Ezekiel Bread and bags of Sandwich Thins to preserve their freshness, and if I find that I’m not using my fresh produce in a timely manner, into the freezer it goes! If you think your bananas are useless once they start to go bad, think again! Peel those suckers and place them in a freezer baggy, then grab them later for smoothies, eat them ‘as-is’ topped with almond butter as a healthy and delicious snack, or throw them in the food processor to make yummy banana softserve.

Makeup For Absolute Beginners: Concealer

Concealer is one of those products that we're are not really sure if we reeeally need it or not. The right concealer can hide just about every imperfection and give you flawless skin. Liquid concealer is especially recommended for dry skin and for concealing large areas like under-eye circles. Solid concealer is necessary to hide stubborn pimples, scars and bruises.

1. Start with a clean moisturized face.
A clean, moisturized face will allow the concealer to go on your skin smoothly and it will blend easier. If done on dry skin, your concealer make your skin look cakey and more dry.

2. Choose the right color.
Just like foundation, choosing the correct concealer can be daunting. Your best bet is to go with shade that matches your skin perfectly, of course. If you are using concealer for highlighting/contouring purposes you would want to go a shade or two lighter for your highlight and a shade or two darker for your contour.

3. Pat, Don't Rub!
I like to use my fingers when applying concealer. To me it gets in tight spaces better (under the lower lash line, around the nose) and blends a lot easier. No matter if you're using your finger or a brush, its better to pat the product into your skin rather than rubbing it.

4. Blend!
Make sure to blend the edges of the concealed area with the surrounding skin by patting on the product in a circular motion to avoid harsh lines in the finished look.

5. Use it to make brows, eye shadows and lipsticks POP!
- Applying a concealer a shade lighter to your brow bone can do wonders for your brows and overall look. It gives your brow a "wow" factor while also covering any new growth you may have.
-Your concealer can also work as an eyeshadow primer when applied to your lids (be sure to use a shade that matches your skin ), helping the shadow to pop and stay on longer.
-Adding a little concealer to your lips just before applying color will help neutralize the lips so that the lipstick color will remain true. You can also add concealer to the perimeter of your mouth get a more defined lip (works great when wearing bright colors like red and pink).

Hey ladies! Long time no chat. When I decided to take some time away from blogging I did not think it was going to be a whole two months. It still doesn't feel like its been two months because time is literally flying. Can you believe that its going to be July come Friday?? We are past the half year mark, soon we're going to be planning for the holidays and a new year.

So what have it missed? Have you all been keeping up with your goals? What about the spring cleaning we talked about? Me, well I've made some progress. I've sorted through what I wanted to do with my future and I made some progress but more on that another time. As far as the mental spring cleaning, that's a work in progress. After doing an assessment I realized I don't have many negative people in my life (thank God) so all the work that needs to be done is internal. I needed to just enjoy life. So that's what I did and that's what I'm going to always do.

So while away I enjoyed time with my boyfriend, traveled to Pennsylvania to watch my baby brother graduate high school, spent countless hours at the dog park, over indulged in Caribbean and Chinese food, slacked off at the gym, suffered a major breakout, made my own Shea Butter, planted a killer flower bed that I am SO PROUD of, got a pedicure with a design on my big toe (its been years since I had a design lol), walked Coney Island and got a hot dog from the original Nathans, became completely obsessed with McDonald's smoothies, learned how to do the wobble. Its been a good two months.

So I did think about the blog a little while I was gone, lol. While keeping makeup the main focus of the blog, I think I'm going to blog about other things that interest me. I enjoy cooking, home decor, landscaping among other things and I wanted to share those things here. As much as I love makeup, natural hair, shopping and all that jazz; I do enjoy other things. Would you all mind the blog branching out just a little? Let me know!

Taking Time to Smell the Roses...

For the past two weeks postings around here has been scarce. Its my goal to have a new post for you all Monday through Friday and I've been failing miserably. Lately I've been working tirelessly at work, my personal life, makeup consults and blogging that "the moment" has been slipping away. Its been a real challenge to balance and balance is what keeps me sane. So I think it's time that I regroup, refocus and come back to you all refreshed. I don't know how long this sabbatical is going to last but I will be back soon!!!

1. As always, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin according to your skin type.

2. Apply a matte foundation to all over your face. Make Up For Ever's Mat Velvet + foundation hides imperfections, evens out skin tone, and mattifies with a non-oily, perfectly powdered finish.

3. Next fill in your brows with a brow pencil. MAC has a great brown pencil that comes in a variety of colors.

4. Highlight the area above your cheekbones with a concealer one shade lighter than your skin color or use YSL's Touche Eclat in a color that works best for you. Blend!!!

5. Prime your lids with Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Lightly dust an orangy/peachy/pinkish eyeshadow on your lid and carry it into the tear duct. If used lightly, MAC's Rule wwould work well.

6. For more drama, apply top AND bottom lashes. Red Cherry lashes will get the job done and they're very inexpensive.

7. Add a cotton candy pink to your cheeks. NARS' Desire is a great option.

8. Finally line your lips with a brown lip liner and fill in your lips with a light pink lipstick. Saint Germain from MAC's Quite Cute Collection is fabulous.

SETTING POWDER

A setting powder is a loose or compact sheer-to-medium coverage powder that “sets” your foundation so that it lasts throughout the day. It adheres to any damp and/or sticky part of the foundation and creates somewhat of a seal. If you used a liquid foundation alone, you can usually feel a “damp” feeling on your face. You can combat this by using a loose setting powder. It can also help remove excess shine.

It’s really beneficial for us oily girls to use a setting powder so that the oils in our skin don’t break down our makeup to the point where it’s sliding and/or disappearing from our faces thus making touch-ups less frequent. It also can stop our makeup from getting all over our clothing or anything we touch throughout the day.

Translucent/Loose Powders~ provides a natural, virtually undetectable finish. In fact, you'll hardly know it's there. The fine-textured formula takes down shine without dulling and won't streak, cake or clog pores.Translucent/loose powders can be purchased in a color close to you skin tone or a white/off white color.

Pressed Powders~ also known as blotting powders provides a small amount of coverage. This powder usually comes in a compact and can be used throughout the day to control oil and shine. Pressed powder can also be used without foundation for minimal coverage. Pressed powder are usual purchased in a color close to your skin tone.

*A little goes a long way. If your face has a "casper the friendly ghost" look or your makeup starts to look cakey or you can flat out see the powder... you probably applied too much.

FINISHING SPRAY

Finishing sprays are usually applied by a spritzer on the face for a little 'pick-me-up'. If you had a long day at work and don't have time to reapply for your after work festivities, a finishing spray works great. They are also perfect for the dewy look we all love. The spray is meant to resist the heat and humidity which causes smearing, melting and loss of makeup color. It is often used by make-up artists on models and actors for photo shoots and filming.

I absolutely love the song Walking by Mary Mary, especially the line "Tell me what you see when I pass by// A shadow of clouds or a light in the sky.." While listening to this song I had a thought, why not take spring cleaning to another level? Instead of just cleaning my home from top to bottom, why not clean my soul. Spring is the season of renewal, rejuvenation and light; packing away all your heavy winter sweaters, boots, cold air and snow until fall. But how can you exude light when your mind is filled with worry, doubt and negative clutter?

So let's start by packing away all the uninspiring thoughts, negativity, physical laziness, people, emotions... just stuff that weigh us down and has us feeling like we are always in the midst of a storm. We will no longer burden ourselves with other people's issues to the point where we forget our own blessings. Once we're finished packing up the things that hold us back from living in light, we will bypass the attic take them to the curb and let the garbage man dispose of them indefinitely because we will not be unpacking that baggage come fall. It'll be then when our minds are clear enough to realize the true abundance, joy and light in store for all us this spring and beyond.

Remember those goals you wrote in January? You may have a little more energy to tackle those. There's still a lot of time left in 2011, you can still achieve whatever you set out to by years end. Rejuvenation, revitalization, peace and light... a spiritual renewal is what we should try and find under that pile of dust this spring.

Do You Embrace Shrinkage?

They say that naturally curly/kinky hair shrinks between 20-80 percent, well I think mine shrink the entire 80 percent. I'm always shocked at my hair length after a workout or wash. But do I hate it? No. I actually think its quite fly if I can get it look the way I want every time I attempt a wash-n-go but that's another story.

Back when I was relaxed I was obsessed with length, mostly because I felt like I could never obtain the length I wanted. Since 'going natural' length is the far from my mind. I actually like that I can wear a TWA one day, a puff the next, a stretched twist out the following day and end the week straight.

A lot of people experience knotting and tangles when wearing their hair in a wash-n-go or shrunken fro, I don't have extremely dense hair but I do take a few precautionary steps.

~Do not wear this style for more than two days. {I wear my twist-outs or braid-outs for a week or more before washing again}
~Keep hair {super} moisturized.
~Keep fingers out of the hair. {I love touching my hair but I've noticed when wearing this particular style it causes more tangles}

Be sure to read Let's Talk Brows! first.

Brush your brows 'up and out' with a brow brush or mascara wand.

Start to define your brow with a brown pencil or powder slightly lighter than your hair color. I used MAC's Spiked.

Follow your natural arch.

Use light stokes in the direction of your natural brow to fill in the rest.

Continue to fill-in to your liking.

*Optional~ to further define your brows take a concealer (your shade or a shade lighter) {I used the same concealer that I can use on the rest of my face} and apply is as if you are applying a brow bone highlight. This will give you brow and extra "oomph".

DIY Beauty | Calming Facial Mask

What you'll need:
½ cup of plain yogurt
2 tablespoons Aloe Vera gel or juice
1 tablespoon raw honey
½ peeled cucumber
A few drops of chamomile oil

Mix well and leave on face for 10-15 minutes.

About the ingredients:

Yogurt~ has antibacterial properties make it a useful, degerming cleanser, and its lactic-acid content soothes irritation, clarifies the pores and softens the skin. It also has probiotics that are helpful with treating skin conditions like acne and eczema.

Aloe Vera~ has a great soothing effect to the skin. Heals sunburns, insect bites etc; it also gives the skin a healthy glow!

Raw Honey~ Heals and moisturizes dry patches of skin and inflamed areas. Raw honey has strong antibacterial properties that can act as a protective barrier on broken skin. Raw honey is also purported to stimulate skin regeneration.

Cucumber~ reduce puffy eyes, improve complexion and tighten open pores.

Chamomile Oil~ softens the skin and has a calming effect on the mind mind and eases fear, anxiety, anger, worries and tension during times of physical and emotional stress.

Makeup for Absolute Beginners | Foundations: Coverage, Finish + Shades and Undertones

Foundation can do fabulous things to the skin. It can make your skin appear dewy, make your oily skin matte, cover blemishes, etc. In addition to finding the right foundation for your skin type, coverage and finish are factors to consider also.

Coverage~ how much of your natural skin will show through.

Sheer coverage- gives luminosity to the skin.
Medium coverage-natural but can cover blemishes or redness.
Full coverage- will completely cover anything you would like to conceal.

Finish~ texture the foundation leaves on your skin.

Satin- dewy, luminous
Natural- perfect balance between satin and matte. Perfect for everyday.
Matte- oil controlled. No shine at all.

Shade and Undertones

This is where it can get real tricky. We've all picked up foundation that we thought were sure to be a perfect match on to find out it was all wrong. Choosing the correct shade and matching your undertones is imperative to the perfect foundation.

Undertones refer to the tones underneath your skin. Most people are yellow/golden, olive or pink/red. This is why some cosmetic companies use labels like warm/neutral/cool.

Yellow/Golden = Warm
Olive = Neutral
Pink/Red = Cool

[Note: MAC's Neutral Cool (NC) vs Neutral Warm (NW) foundations work a little different. For example, I have warm undertones but MAC's NC shades work best for my complexion because the cool from the NC shades neutralizes my warm undertones making the foundation appear more natural on me. Depending on your shade {see below} this theory may not work for you. I can only use this reverse theory with MAC. With other foundations like Loreal True Match, I have to stick to their warm shades. Get it? Confusing.. I know.]

Some easy ways to determine your undertone is to (1) stand in natural light with a bare face and see which color(s) shine through your skin most or (2) look at the veins in your arm; if they appear green then your are more than likely warm, if they appear blue you are more than likely cool.

Shade refers to how light or dark your skin is. You should your match foundation on high plains of cheek to neck. A lot of us run into the issue where we may have two or three different shades on our face. You may have to use a lighter shade in the center of your face and a darker shade on the outer areas to avoid looking 'washed out'.

** I feel like this may be a little (a lot) confusing but I explained it the best I could. Remember 'if it aint broke don't fix it' and 'keep it simple'. I will try my best to answer any questions you may have.

When I was transitioning I heard a 101 reasons why someone felt like they couldn't 'go natural'. I never asked but when I talked to friends or family about my transition they would say "girl, I don't think natural hair would look good on me" or [insert excuse number 2,301,650 here]. It never bothered me because my journey was for me and I'm not one of the those Natural Nazis who think relaxed hair equals self hate. I do advocate for natural hair but I don't judge people who slap on the creamy crack.

About six months to a year after my big chop some of the same friends would randomly expose that they are now transitioning to natural hair. It would come from total left field, something like {pats head} "its been 12 weeks since I had a relaxer and this new growth is bout to kill me... oh yeah I'm going natural. What can I do about this" or "your hair is fly and it grew out really fast. I haven't had a relaxer in four months, I think I'm going to take the plunge!!!!" It always make me chuckle inside because I remember when struggled with whether or not to go natural. I'm glad I'm able to inspire people close to me to do {what I feel} is best for their hair.

Who inspired you to go natural? Was it someone you knew in real life or online forums/blogs/youtube? After you transitioned did anyone ever tell you that you've inspired them to 'go natural'?

Get the Look | The Perfect Orange Lip

Just as I posted here, orange lips are all the rage this summer! I know what you're thinking- "I can not wear such a bold lip or this will not look good with my skin tone!!" Well here's where I prove you wrong; just like orange eyeshadow or orange blush, orange lipstick looks fabulous on women of color! Just Google it or keep reading to see how I make it work for me.

I lined my lips with MAC's Chestnut lip liner, put MAC's Morange on top then added a little C-Thru lipglass also by MAC.

Here are some other options that will work just as well!

I love that Spring/Summer 2011 is all about color! Pastels are so fresh and feminine, perfect for spring. My girls and I traveled to the mountains this past weekend for our annual girls getaway. This year we decided to check out the Blue Ridge Mountains in Blue Ridge, GA and we had a blast!! Our cabin was gorgeous (even though it was at the very top of the mountain) and the town of Blue Ridge was very quaint and full of character.

I have been fortunate to meet wonderful friends at every stage in my life but when I moved to Charlotte it was particularly hard because I felt I was at the point where people were generally not interested in making new friends. I was (finally) grown, just starting my career in a new city and lonely. After coming in contact with a few bad apples, I met the PERFECT set of friends. I mean these women are truly FABULOUS. Within the 2.5 years that we've known each other, we have made a lifetime of memories. I know that these five women (one is not photographed. She couldn't make it because she was purchasing her first home!!) will be in my life forever and I am so excited to share my journey with them. Our relationships are divine both collectively and individually.

I decided to repost this post because I felt it really explains what foundation is best for different skin types. I added some foundations options for each skin type to assist you find your holy grail foundation.

We all know what a headache finding the right foundation can be. Choosing the wrong foundations can lead to break outs, ashy skin, two-toned skin... just a plethora of problems. Half the battle of choosing the right foundation is choosing the foundation that right for your skin type. We all know that foundations must match your tone, the perfect amount of coverage is important but the foundation should also be work well with your skin type to ensure a flawless finish.

Oily Skin~ Oily skin is caused by over-active glands, which produce a substance called Asebum, a naturally healthy skin lubricant. When the skin produces too much sebum, it becomes thick and heavy in texture. It is prone to blackheads. The oil oozes and gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged and the skin has a coarse look.

Pressed Powder Foundation: Pressed powder controls shine while leaving the skin with a matte finish.
Oil-Free Liquid Foundation: An oil free liquid foundation is great for oily skin. It can also give you a dewy look while controlling oil.
Mineral Makeup: Offers light-medium coverage while absorbing excess oil and hydrating the skin.

Dry Skin~ Dry skin has a low level of sebum and can be prone to sensitivity. The skin has a parched look caused by its inability to retain moisture. It usually feels "tight" and uncomfortable after washing unless some type of moisturizer or skin cream is applied

Cream Foundation: Cream foundation's are great for drier skin-types because they tend to be more moisturizing and lends a dewy finish to the skin.
Tinted Moisturizer: Tinted moisturizers offers a slight hint of color while hydrating the skin. This is perfect for achieving that "fresh faced, no-makeup" look.

Normal Skin~ If you don’t have a problem with oily skin or breakouts, and you don’t feel that your skin is dry and tight then lucky you... You have normal skin.

Combination Skin~ Combination skin is a term used to describe facial skin that shows symptoms of both dry skin and oily skin. Combination skin can be a challenge to care for effectively, as oil-decreasing products may be over-drying in certain places on the skin, while moisturizing products may cause excessive oiliness in other areas.

Cream-Powder Foundation: Best suited for heavy coverage, cream to powder foundation controls shine in the T-zone and leaves your skin fresh and flawless.
Liquid-Powder Foundation: This type of makeup is ideal for those looking for light-medium coverage.

Sensitive/Acne-prone skin~ Acne prone skin is a condition that occurs due to the overproduction of oil by the oil glands of the skin. The oil that normally lubricates the skin gets trapped in blocked oil ducts and results in what we know as pimples, blackheads and whiteheads on the surface of skin. Sometimes it also includes deeper skin lesions that are called cysts.

If you have sensitive/acne prone skin, it's best to reach for foundations with moisturizing ingredients, oil-free, paraben and fragrance free, as well as allergy tested.
Visit a dermatologist to find a path for healthier skin.

2. Prime your face with a primer like MAC's Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50.

3. Apply a cream foundation all over the skin like Kevyn Aucoin's Skin Enhancing Foundation. Set the foundation with MAC's Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder or something similar.

4. Gently fill on your brows with a brow pencil one shade lighter than your hair color.

5. Prime your eyelids with your favorite prime then add a smokey grey shadow like Stila's Diamond Lil to your lids extending in your crease and lower lash line. Line your top and bottom lash lines with a black pencil like Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Pencil in Zero. Add lashes if you're fancy!

6. Blend a cotton candy pink blush onto you cheeks. NARS Angelika is a great option.

7. Lay a soft pink lip gloss like NYX's Beautiful and you're good to go!

If you didn't grow up playing in your mother's makeup or tearing out cool makeup looks and taping them to your bedroom walls, you're probably more than mystified on how to start or go about it. Let me preface this by saying there are no rules to makeup. You can wear as little or as much as you like. There is no right or wrong way to apply eye shadows or foundations. And women of color can wear any color we darn well please. Beauty is subjective and is in the eye of the beholder.

There are a couple things to consider before starting your new makeup regimen. Are you looking for a polished, professional image? Or are you seeking a glamorous, sexy one? Do you prefer the natural look or makeup that shows as makeup? Which features do you want to emphasize? How much time in the morning do you have to put towards applying makeup?

In this series I will give detailed posts on how start a makeup regimen based off of the products I know and use. Please keep in mind that there are tons and tons of products available and that its up to you to tailor your regimen to fit you. March's Letter from the Editor | Balancing Acts

It's not until the weekend (sometimes) that I actually get to press the "pause" button on life. I take these two prized days and fill them up with activities such as: socializing with friends, catching up on sleep or possibly another form of entertainment. I sometimes forget about myself while I'm busy scheduling my time away to other people. This month I will focus on the art of balancing... my health depends on it.

Life is all about balance. Without balance we burnout. Signs of burnout are sickness, stress, depression, weariness, etc. Our body is telling us to slow down and just breathe... listen to it. You might be amazed to learn that most people don't know that breathing — an act that we do some 20,000 times each day — can deeply influence your health and happiness on many levels. Wow, something so simple, yet so profound!

Many of us are working double duty as a parent, spouse, partner, friend, employee, employer all while fitting time in for activities we enjoy doing...that is a lot!

If you work from 9-5, but have aspirations that you can only fulfill after hours, then it's difficult to not burn the candle at both ends. I urge you to take an hour or so each day to relax and focus on you. Try writing down a list of fun activities you'd like to try or places you'd like to go and make sure every other week you check one off, whether it's riding your bike through the park, visiting a new exhibit at a museum, catching a new film or having a monthly dinner club with your friends. This is your life, LIVE it!

If you read my interview with KisforKinky, you'd know I have traction alopecia. After years of relaxing, braiding, weaving and repeating the cycle over and over again, my edges started to thin at the temples. I ignored it (or maybe I didn't even notice because I wore weaves and braids so much) that when I finally went to the dermatologist they told me it was nothing I could do to get my hair back.

What is Traction Alopecia:

Traction alopecia is caused by pulling at the hair over a long period of time. It most frequently occurs in our (kinky/coarse) hair, and the area most affected is the front and sides. The use of thermal or chemical hair straightening, and hair braiding or weaving are examples of styling techniques that place kinky/coarse hair types at high risk for various "traumatic" alopecias. Cornrows, too, can cause this as well as thinning all over the scalp. The first signs are thinner and weaker hairs along the front and over the ears.

The key to stopping traction alopecia is detecting it early; if it has been going on for a long time, the hair follicles decrease in size and do not produce any more hairs. Hair styles that put unnecessary strain on the hair root must be changed for a more gentle hair style. If you suspect you may be vulnerable to traction alopecia please please please immediately to change your hair style or practices and by all means, GO see a dermatologist NOW.

Hair transplants (or hair grafts) are an option for treating traction alopecia. This is a surgical procedure that move individual hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to bald or balding parts (the recipient site). Its said to take up to a year for the bald areas to completely fill in and the follicles work like brand new allowing hair to grow the way it does throughout the rest of your head.

As for me and my alopecia:
Contrary to what dermatologists told me, I believe I am making progress... slow, very slow... but progress none the less. I have stopped abusing my hair and now practice healthy hair care. I also massage my temples with Vitamin E oil daily to increase blood circulation in those areas. Since I know better, I do better and I will continue to teach my anyone who will listen to do better so they won't have to experience the lost of their crown and glory at such a young age.

DIY Beauty | Nightly Lip Exfoliate

After looking around for a great lip scrub and spending too much money on products that didn't work well, I experimented until I came up with this recipe. The best thing is that the ingredients are ones that are already in the kitchen! This scrub makes your lips silky smooth.

What you'll need:
2 tbsp Sugar
2 tsp Sweet Almond Oil
2 tsp Grapeseed Oil
2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Mix all ingredients together until it forms a thick paste, transfer mixture to a container. Use nightly before going to bed. When you wake up, your lips will feel heavenly.

About the ingredients:
Sweet Almond Oil; acts as an emollient to keep your lips soft and smooth all day
Grapeseed Oil; hydrates, and delivers skin loving nutrients to your lips.
Meadowfoam Oil; is choked full of moisturizing essential fatty acids
Vitamin E Oil; smooths, softens and protects lips from harsh environmental element.
Sugar; acts as a natural humectant, drawing the moisturizing properties of the oils into your skin, sugar also gently exfoliates your skin, leaving your lips soft and smooth.

Unnecessary Evil: Hyperpigmentation

As if dealing with huge mountain sized zits isn't traumatizing enough, the after-math of such zits are far worst than the zit itself. Yes I'm speaking about dark spots also known as Hyperpigmentation. If you had a chance to read my skin woes then you know that I am no stranger to acne. I dealt with it as a tween, teen and grown-ass woman but what I've grown to realize its not necessarily the pimple that I loathe (they are usually gone within a week) its the dark spots that are left behind to remind me of the pimple for months on in. Of course I wouldn't dare pop the pimple as a matter of fact I would avoid it like the plague but once the inflammation went away I was still left with a "friend".

During one of my many visits to the dermatologist, I was able to gain a better understanding of this common skin condition. After being told "only time will fade the scars" I learned about the causes, effects and treatments that can help fade spots faster.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that is caused by an increase in the skin’s melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to skin and hair. Unfortunately, due to the high levels of melanin in our skin, individuals of color are highly susceptible to this common plight; the darker the skin, the more prone to discoloration an individual will be.

There are many factors that will trigger or intensify the appearance of dark spots and scarring. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a direct result of acne. PIH is a discoloration that occurs following an inflammatory wound to the skin; this can include pimples, cuts, burns, picking, etc. When such a trauma takes place, skin cells are automatically triggered to regenerate and produce melanin in order to heal the wound. But the result is typically excessive levels of pigment that surpass the intensity and lifespan of the original spot. Aside from acne, certain drugs and antibiotics can also cause hyperpigmentation, as well as cosmetic procedures like laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. It’s important to note that dark spots are triggered, and extremely intensified, by direct exposure to sunlight as well. Thus, lack of sunscreen use will only make matters ten times worst.

There are both natural and chemical treatments for hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is not permanent so dark marks will eventually fade but this can be a very lengthy process. Natural solutions such as glycolic acid, cocoa and shea butters and Vitamins A/C/E are great for targeting marks because they heal damaged cells.

Another popular option is a chemical lightening agent called Hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is available in varying potencies, typically 1-2% (over-the counter) or 3-4% (by prescription only). It works by blocking the enzymes responsible for melanin production. Thus, it should only be applied directly to the dark spots (otherwise, you will be lightening your regular skin as well). It is strongly advised that products with hydroquinone be used at night, as they can have reverse effects when exposed to sunlight; spots will actually become darker. Even once the creams have soaked into the skin overnight, sunscreen is an absolute must. It is very important that races with darker complexions also protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

For me, my previous accutane treatment and clarisonic helps keep breakouts and hyperpigmentation at bay. I still get random flair ups that leave the dreaded 'dark marks' but I just dab vitamin E oil to help speed the fading process and I WEAR AN SPF 45 MOISTURIZER EVERY-SINGLE-DAY {Aveeno Positively Radiant}!

Revive Your Makeup With a Few Simple Steps

I'm going to be honest with y'all, I usually do not touch-up my makeup throughout the day nor do I carry a makeup bag. However, there are times when we have an after-five event to attend leaving us very little time to freshen up in between. Below are a couple of steps to take you from looking like you've been in and out of meetings all day to fresh out of a MUA's chair.

Remove shine: Use blotting paper (~~or if you're like me a paper towel~~) to remove any oil that may have found a home on your skin throughout out the day.

Eyeliner check: Remove any smeared eyeliner or mascara from the eye area with a cotton swab and a little moisturizer. Dip a cotton swab in a dollop of moisturizer and gently remove any liner or mascara with your swab. Using the moisturizer helps remove the product without breaking down the foundation/concealer underneath it.

Creased eyeshadow?: If your eyeshadow has creased, blot eyes with a clean sponge (~~or if your like me a paper towel~~) removing any oil from the lid. Reapply a small amount of shadow to the eyes and be sure to blend.

Reapply Powder: Reapply pressed or translucent powder as needed to mattify oil prone areas of your skin. You can also lightly touch-up your blush but only if needed.

Revive those lips: Revive your lip color by simply adding a bit of gloss or completely remove your lipstick/gloss, moisturize your lips, then reapply your lip liner, lipstick and/or lip gloss. I'd go for the latter.

Finishing Spray: Lightly spray your face with your favorite finishing spray for a natural glow.

The days leading up to today have been rough; long sleepless nights, missing my grandfather, thoughts about picking up and moving my life back to Pennsylvania, and loneliness. Today makes a full year since my grandfather left us. I have never experienced a death that affected me so much, to the point where I could no longer mask the pain. I can be a very stoic person, its never been easy for me to express how I'm feeling or talk about what I'm going through but when I was in what felt like my darkest hour my boyfriend read these bible verses to me:

^"8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. ⁹ Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.

Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them."

Today is a warm and sunny day the opposite of the cold and cloudy day we buried my Pop-pop. In memory of him I promise to smile all day and be thankful for his life and mine. He lived a full life and touched many. I can hear him telling stories and laughing now.

Herbs That Stimulate Hair Growth + Winner of MAC Giveaway!

There are several products lining beauty supply shelves that promise hair growth, but all in all, hair growth is not achieved by a ‘magic’ or ‘miracle’ product. Age and genetics are both factors in hair length, but, on average, our hair grows about a quarter to a half an inch a month. Although there is not one product that can make hair grow faster, there are several natural ingredients that stimulate the scalp and aid in hair growth.

Aloe

Aloe can be applied directly onto your scalp and promotes hair growth. It stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and also fights against alopecia.

Horsetail

Horsetail, contains high concentrations of silicic acid and other silicates. It also contains potassium, aluminum, and manganese, all of which aid in the prevention of hair loss.

Evening Primrose

Evening primrose increases blood circulation in the hair follicle and is high in the essential fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid which stimulates hair growth.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle disinfects the scalp and increases blood circulation. It blocks the enzymes that cause hair loss and promotes hair re-growth.

Rosemary

Rosemary stimulates the scalp and helps prevent dry scalp and dandruff. It is also a natural hair conditioner.

Rosemary Hair Rinse

Boil rosemary leaves in one cup of water and let steep for 5 to 7 minutes. After cooling, use the liquid as a final rinse after washing, or pour into a spray bottle as a daily leave-in. Keep the mixture refrigerated and add a few drops of sage as a preservative if you are planning to keep the mixture longer than one week.

Sage

Sage is a stimulant and is anti-bacterial. Sage essential oil and can be combined with rosemary and lavender and used on your scalp to balance the oils in your scalp and help stimulate hair growth.

Sage Tea and Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has a very high natural pH and gets rid of product build-up by dissolving minerals, toxins, and dirt particles as well as fights dry scalp and dandruff .

Scalp Treatment

Mix four ounces of apple cider vinegar (ACV) with four ounces of cooled sage tea or ten drops of sage essential oil. Pour the mixture on your scalp, then wrap your hair with a towel or put on a plastic cap for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual.

After wash rinse

Add about 5 drops of sage oil, or 2 cups of cooled sage tea, with 1 capful of ACV and use as a final rinse after washing. The mixture does not have to be washed out.

Since my twenty-sixth year of life began, I’ve been trying to figure out my purpose in life. I want to believe that right now at this very moment what I am typing will mean something to each of you; that it will ignite some sort of dormant desire in you that has been hidden, and maybe now is the time for you to set it free. I want to know that before I am laid to rest, my living, my learning, my faith and my actions have not been in vain. I want to rest in peace knowing that, “I have conquered, and accomplished finding my purpose in life”. I’ve began thinking about what I truly want out of (and in) life. I know for a fact that I wish hold down a fulfilling job, get married, bring life into this world, travel the world and help others (no matter how little or how big).

What I have found to be the most tedious task is bringing this list of things mentioned above into fruition. I have accomplished both small and big goals set for myself and I have set goals to accomplish in the future. Once I have set a list of goals for myself, I begin to take action. Sometimes baby steps, other times big leaps. Sometimes, I need a little boost. Other times, all I actually require is the thought.

I believe in taking chances, I’ve done it and some have proven to be some of my best decisions to date. I like to think of life as a learning tool. It is given to us so that we can make mistakes, document those mistakes and then learn from them. I have been thinking about my purpose. Why am I here? How big does my voice need to get to show the world I exist? This is what I’m working on, I want to be known not for the things I have done, but for the person I am. I want to live on even after I'm gone.

So all of this has me thinking, who gives us purpose? When do we find it? How do we obtain it? Is purposeful living greater than non-purposeful living? Are we really living if we are without purpose? Who sets these standards? I do not have the answers to any of these questions. Is it as simple as passion? I just know that I have an intimate connection with thinking I am here for a reason. God has a reason for me. I live every day knowing that tomorrow could not arrive so I push myself with the constant reminder that there has to be a greater ending (or beginning) ahead. The journey that it will take to complete some of the things that are deep in my soul will probably be a long and dreadful one but the outcome will live on forever. I have a purpose; I’m just still searching for it. I have faith that it'll come.

DIY Beauty | Sweet Almond Oil and Honey Facial Mask

Honey is my secret to bright, glowing skin. I use it in conjunction with sugar to exfoliate a couple times a month. Even though I have oily skin, I still experience dry patches during the winter months. I decided to whip up a mask using some of my favorite ingredients to combat my winter skin issues. The outcome.... soft, moisturized, glowing skin.

What you'll need:
2 tbsp of Raw Honey
2 tbsp of Sweet Almond Oil
5 drops of Rose Essential Oil
2 drops of Vitamin E Oil (I buy the soft gel pill form and cut it open.)

Mix well. Massage onto clean face and neck with fingertips. Relax for 15 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Gently pat dry to reveal a fresh, soft complexion.

About the ingredients:
Raw Honey~ Heals and moisturizes dry patches of skin and inflamed areas. Raw honey has strong antibacterial properties that can act as a protective barrier on broken skin. Raw honey is also purported to stimulate skin regeneration.

Sweet Almond Oil~ Acts as an emollient to keep your lips soft and smooth all day. Sweet Almond Oil is easily absorbed making it a popular oil used in spas. It restores the skin's pH balance by preserving moisture lending it a glow.

Rose Essential Oil~ Acts a skin toner. It tightens skin pores making them decrease in size over time. It smells wonderful and is said to help combat stress and depression as well.

Vitamin E Oil~ Acts an an antioxidant which prevents the formation of free radicals on the skin and protects it from any kind of damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is also said to lighten acne scars over time.

Six Different Styles to Transition to Natural Hair

One of the hardest things about transitioning to natural hair is styling the two very different textures. Below are some options for those of you who want a little variety during your transition.

I know the BC isn't for everyone but it is an easy way to avoid dealing with two textures and it looks great on everyone, to me.

Wear braids until your natural hair grows to your desired length.

Braid-outs and twist-outs blend the different two textures well. Braid or twist your hair while its wet and take them out when the hair is dry.

Funky up-dos are always cute.

Roller sets are fabulous and they usually blend the two textures seamlessly.

Weaves are also an option, you can even play around with different kinky textures to spice them up.

The Bentonite Clay Mask and Me

I've been using the bentonite clay mask on my face sporadically for a couple years now. Little did I know, it has great effects on the hair as well. Bloggers and youtubers have been raving about how clean, moisturized and defined it leaves their curls so I decided to give it a try.

On the hair bentonite clay is said to clarify by removing dirt, oil and product build-up, give sheen, detangle and enhance natural curl pattern. On the skin it is said to draw out toxins, improve skin tone, shrink pores and give a healthy glow. Sounds like a win-win product.

Bentonite clay is commonly used externally in mud baths, facial masks, various skin applications and is thought to promote clear skin. Bentonite clay has been used successfully as a treatment for a variety of skin infections and in arresting the spread of certain types of skin diseases.

My mixture consists of about 1/3 bentonite clay, 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 1/3 water. I mix these three contents until I get a thick clay like consistency. I applied the mask to my dry, unwashed hair and skin, left it on for about 20-30 minutes then rinsed it out. My hair did not require any additional moisture so I just followed up with a leave-in conditioner.

My hair absolutely loved the bentonite clay mask. As promised it left my hair soft and my coils were very defined. I will definitely add this to my regimen. As for my skin, it was soft and tight as usual.

As always, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin according to your skin type.
Apply Face Atelier's Ultra Foundation all over the face. This is a great silicone-based foundation that don't crease and lasts all day. Set you foundation with a loose powder like Make Up For Ever Microfinish Powder.
Lightly sweep NARS Exhbit A Blush in your crease with a MAC 217 brush then line your top lash line with CoverGirl's LineExact Liquid Liner. Line your bottom line with CoverGirl's Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner. Add a little of MAC's Vanilla Pigment to your inner tear ducts then top it off with some fab lashes.
Pull your NARS Exhibit A Blush out again and add it to the apple of your cheeks. To take it up a notch, lightly conture the sides of your nose with the same blush and BLEND.
For the perfect pout, add Sephora's Maniac Long Wearing Lipstick in number 19 (watermelon rose cream) and top it off with MAC's Money, Honey ( a mid-tone rosy mauve with red pearl).

DIY | The Embellished Heel

Glue the end of the necklace at the bottom of the heel. Wrap the length of the necklace around the heel, use small dabs of glue to keep it in place along the way.

All Of Me: January Letter From the Editor

Every year I make tons of New Year's resolutions and I rarely keep them. I'm going to do a better job keeping in touch with friends, I'm going to do 100 sit-ups every night before bed, I'm going to come out of my shell and become more outgoing... blah, blah, blah.

I spend a lot of time writing my resolutions out on pretty stationary, planning the perfect ending to the year... you know so there can be a perfect beginning to a perfect year. I've cleaned my house from top to bottom, I ate black-eyed peas and collard greens to make sure my luck was good and money on point. I've brought in the new year at church in prayer, at an overcrowded party spending way too much money on drinks. I've been in front of the television watching movies, sleeping, laughing and toasting to life with my closet girlfriends, rubbing elbows with movers and shakers, magical moments with boyfriends hoping that love would linger around a little longer... you get the point. All to ensure I started the new year fabulously. Over the years I've become an expert at creating perfect scenarios to guarantee the pendulum will stay on my side for the upcoming year.

None of these things helped me usher in drastic changes on January 1. When I reflect on times in my life where I made a change I realized that I had to change my attitude and I had to be patient. Nothing or no one changes at an instant or when the clock strikes twelve. There was nothing that was going to magically occur that would make me change into the better person I wanted to be.

So this year I decided to take a different approach. I will not give up if my goals are not met by January 15. I will enjoy the journey. I will work on becoming a better Tamara from the inside out. I do not need to wait on a magical date to change my life. I will work to improve daily. I will accept my faults and be honest about them. I will live, smile more, laugh more. I will appreciate my blessings. I will take chances. I will give all of me.

We all know what a headache finding the right foundation can be. Choosing the wrong foundations can lead to break outs, ashy skin, two-toned skin... just a plethora of problems. Half the battle of choosing the right foundation is choosing the foundation that right for your skin type. We all know that foundations must match your tone, the perfect amount of coverage is important but the foundation should also be work well with your skin type to ensure a flawless finish.

Pressed Powder Foundation: Pressed powder controls shine while leaving the skin with a matte finish.
Oil-Free Liquid Foundation: An oil free liquid foundation is great for oily skin. It can also give you a dewy look while controlling oil.
Mineral Makeup: Offers light-medium coverage while absorbing excess oil and hydrating the skin.

Cream Foundation: Cream foundation's are grerat for drier skin-types because they tend to be more moisturizing and lends a dewy finish to the skin.
Tinted Moisturizer: Tinted moisturizers offers a slight hint of color while hydrating the skin. This is perfect for achieving that "fresh faced, no-makeup" look.

Normal Skin~ If you don’t have a problem with oily skin or breakouts, and you don’t feel that your skin is dry and tight then lucky you... You have normal skin.

Tinted Moisturizer: Tinted moisturizers offers a slight hint of color while hydrating the skin.
Mineral Foundation: Offers light-medium coverage while absorbing excess oil and hydrating the skin.
Liquid Foundation: Offers light-medium coverage in a variety of finishes while evening out skin tone and hydrating the skin.
Cream Foundation: Ideal for those uneven skin tones or if you're looking for heavier coverage.

Cream-Powder Foundation: Best suited for heavy coverage, cream to powder foundation controls shine in the T-zone and leaves your skin fresh and flawless.
Liquid-Powder Foundation: This type of makeup is ideal for those looking for light-medium coverage.

If you have sensitive/acne prone skin, it's best to reach for foundations with moisturizing ingredients, oil-free, paraben and fragrance free, as well as allergy tested.

No More Frizz | Five Tips to Enhance Your Kinks

1. Use cold water when rinsing your hair. Cold water makes the hair more shiny and manageable by sealing the cuticle.

2. Do not dry your hair with a towel. Gently squeeze the hair from root to end to alleviate excess water. Rubbing you hair with a towel will only manipulate your kinks more causing frizz.

3. Never use a thin toothed or narrow comb on your hair. Because the teeth are narrow and close together, combing/detangling can cause the hair to tear which results in excess breakage. Instead use a large wide tooth comb or paddle brush to detangle when the hair is wet.

4. Avoid excess manipulation, especially when the hair is damp. This is disrupt the curly pattern and leave you frizzy. Style hair when wet or dry.

5. Invest in a good curl defining product. My faves are Carol's Daughter Hair Milk and Bee Mine Curly Butter.

As a makeup artist and a beauty enthusiast I come across tons of products but there are only a few that I can not do without. Since this is my first time doing a "beauty wrap up" I decided to give you the nitty gritty {what will ALWAYS be on my list} of must-haves. So without further ado... adieu? Whatever, here goes!

My Work

My Clarisonic. I love my clarisonic. I use it about three times a week and it leaves my face feeling clean and supply. My enlarged pores seem to be smaller and my skin is much softer. I use it with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and moisturize with Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer.

NARS Blushes. While many women skip blush {talked about that here} its a very important step in my routine. It highlights my cheekbones creating more dimension on my face. NARS blushes are pigmented and very vibrant and with a hefty price tag of $26 you are guaranteed to get your monies worth because a little goes a long way. My favorites are Orgasm, Taj Mahal and Exhibit A.

MAC Spiked Brow Pencil. Before I switched to Spiked brow pencil I was using a powder. In my opinion, the pencil gives me a softer more natural brow.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat. I have yet to purchase this for myself, every time I go to Sephora the $40 price tag always gets me but this instant pick-me-up brings light and radiance to the skin. It brightens the complexion to perfection and will be one of the first products I add to my collection in 2011.

NYX Jumbo Pencil. These are a great, inexpensive alternative to paints and paint pots. They help eye shadows that wouldn't normally show well on our skin to pop. For less than $5 a pop, you can't go wrong. You may still need to use a base like Urban Decay's Primer Potion underneath these because they can crease.

Benefit BAD gal Mascara. I love love love this mascara. It lengthens, separates and add tons of volume to my lashes. I don't have long, full lashes so mascara has always been a struggle for me but the BAD gal wand goes a great job at intensifying my eyes.

MAC Eyeshadows. Always a favorite of mine. MAC has just about every color you can dream of and for the most part the shadows are pigmented, intense and they last. The range in textures and colors gives you a lot to choose from and will have you grinning from ear-to-ear every time you step foot near a MAC counter.

MAC Lipsticks. Matte, Amplified, Lustre, Glaze.... I love their lipsticks. Their range of color is massive and its the home of my favorite color, Ruby Woo!

One yard of fabric (I used Jersey), Scissors, Ruler

Fold the fabric in half. From the crease, measure about eight inches in and eight inches down. Where the two points meet cut a 10 inch vertical slit downward.

Open the fabric.
